Abstract

This paper contributes to the existing literature on whether or not a nexus exists between farmer’s perception of climatic variability and food security. Using a mixed methods approach, it analyses the impact of climatic variability on food security for the rural farmers in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The outcome of the study shows that majority of the farmers have perceived that number of hot days had increased while the number of cold days had decreased compared to the last 30 years. They also perceived that rainfall pattern is becoming more erratic with decreased length of rainy days resulting in agricultural drought that imposed serious challenge to food security. Furthermore, the study shows that farmers in the area have perceived climate variability as negative outcome of sins and disobedience to God. The study recommends good agricultural practice and excellent water and soil management to reduce the level of food insecurity.
