Abstract

The study set out to understand the influence of cultural beliefs on the adoption of Improved Shea Butter Processing Techniques in Oyo State. Shea butter, which is a product of the shea tree is a source of income for many women in rural areas across West Africa. It is used majorly in the food and cosmetics industries. This is why the study set out to understand the influence of cultural beliefs on the adoption of Improved Shea Butter Processing Techniques, due to the fact that Oyo shea processors still adopt the traditional method of processing the shea. In achieving this objective, the mixed method of research incorporating the qualitative and quantitative methods was used. Then, the multi-stage sampling technique was adopted in selecting 400
respondents and 10 interviewees. In analyzing the data, the frequency/percentages tables and multiple regression analysis were used to depict the results of the study. The findings revealed that Oyo shea processors believe the use of ISBPTs reduce the potency of the processed shea and erodes their cultural heritage. The study then recommends that the shea processors should be enlightened about the importance of these improved processing techniques.
