Abstract

This study presents a qualitative, literature-based analysis of sustainable innovative performance in Nigerian tech startups, examining its drivers, constraints, performance implications and ecosystem conditions within a dynamic yet institutionally unstable context. The study synthesises peer-reviewed literature, industry and ecosystem reports, policy documents, and documented secondary case evidence on startups such as Flutterwave, LifeBank, Thrive Agric, RecyclePoints, and Arnergy, using a deductive-inductive thematic analysis guided by the Triple Bottom Line and interpreted through resource-based, dynamic capabilities, and institutional theory perspectives. The synthesis identifies six key drivers of sustainable innovative performance alongside interconnected financial, infrastructural, regulatory, cultural, skills, and ESG-related constraints, and indicates that startups reported in the literature as integrating sustainability into their innovation processes are associated with stronger growth, survival, competitive differentiation, stakeholder trust, and resilience. The study contributes a context-sensitive conceptualisation of sustainable innovative performance and proposes a consolidated conceptual framework that links firm-level
capabilities and ecosystem conditions to multi-dimensional startup performance, providing a foundation for future primary empirical research.
